Interior Cleaning vs. Deep Cleaning and Shampooing

By Kyle Massingill, owner of Forged by Heart — five years of hands-on detailing experience in Richmond, KY. Published 2026-09-21.

These three phrases get used interchangeably, and that is where most price confusion comes from. They describe three different amounts of work.

Standard interior cleaning

A standard clean removes what sits on the surface: trash, loose debris, dust on hard surfaces and dirt in the carpet that a vacuum can lift. Glass gets cleaned, mats get cleaned, surfaces get dressed. It is the right choice for a car that gets cleaned regularly. Basic Interior starts at $145 for a car.

Deep cleaning

Deep cleaning goes after what is worked into the material rather than sitting on it: seams, seat tracks, vents, door pockets, the headliner, and embedded pet hair that a vacuum alone will not release. Pet hair in particular has to be lifted mechanically before extraction, and that is time, not product.

Carpet and upholstery shampooing

Shampooing agitates cleaning solution into the fibers and then extracts the soil and moisture back out. It addresses soil that has been pressed into the carpet and fabric seats over time. It is included in Signature Deep Clean (from $240) and in Full Interior (from $195).

Two honest limits: shampooing lifts soil, but old stains from dye, ink, oil or sun damage may not fully release, and fabric needs drying time before the interior smells fully neutral. Results depend on the material and how long the stain has been there.

Leather and other materials

Leather and vinyl are cleaned and conditioned rather than shampooed. Alcantara, suede and some perforated leathers need a gentler approach. Telling us the seat material when you book helps us bring the right process.

Which one do you need

  • Dust and crumbs only: standard interior cleaning.
  • Pet hair, dirty headliner, visible traffic lanes in the carpet: deep cleaning with shampoo.
  • Heavy soil, decontamination, mold present: Fresh Start, quoted after we see it.
